Duplex steel is a type of stainless steel known for its dual-phase microstructure, consisting of both austenitic (face-centered cubic crystal structure) and ferritic (body-centered cubic crystal structure) phases, with the term "duplex" refers to the dual-phase structure of these steels.

This combination of phases imparts a set of desirable properties, including high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, compared to standard austenitic stainless steels, making duplex steels suitable for various applications in aggressive environments. Both the low nickel content and the high strength (enabling thinner sections to be used) give significant cost benefits.
